Although the CDC announced the end of the global COVID pandemic, the agency remains focused on how we can prevent future viral outbreaks. Most recently, the agency updated guidelines on indoor air quality, recommending that buildings aim for 5 or more air changes every hour in any space that is occupied for an extended period.
The CDC also recommends using filters rated MERV-13 or higher in heating and air conditioning systems. These filters can remove more germs from the air than lower-rated filters. In addition, the CDC advises setting the thermostat’s fan control to the “ON” position instead of “AUTO” when people are in the building. This will make the fan operate continuously, which can help to circulate more air and remove airborne viral particles more quickly.
These measures are especially important during outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, as the virus can spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
