What we learned from COVID-19: Cleaning for Health and Appearance

This month marks the third year since COVID-19 changed the way we live, work – and clean. We wanted to take this opportunity to look back on how commercial cleaning companies such as Mister Kleen became front-line heroes for keeping essential government agencies and other organizations in operation.

As health experts learned more about this new virus and how it was transmitted, it became vital to understand the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting.

Our partners, old and new, relied on Mister Kleen’s years of expertise to create cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection programs tailored to each facility’s needs in terms of space and occupancy.

COVID-19 mitigation training

In the face of this new hazard, Mister Kleen front-line crews regularly trained on COVID-19 safety, including addressing biohazards and bloodborne pathogens, the proper use of PPE, EPA-registered disinfectant protocol, and more.

In addition, three senior executives – Dianna Clark, Chad Clark, and Christy Clark – completed a course on infection and contamination control measures for infectious disease outbreak situations such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

They received their certificate for completing the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC)’s Online Fundamentals Training Course in May 2020, just two months after Virginia announced its first case of COVID-19.

As we continued to customize ongoing and emergency service programs for commercial and high-security facilities, we also helped our partners overcome supply chain challenges by assisting in sourcing PPE and creating our own hand sanitizing stations.

Almost a year into the pandemic, Mister Kleen’s work in the DC Metro region was highlighted in Washingtonian magazine. Photographs of Mister Kleen employees disinfecting an office were included in the following features:

  • “Get. It. Done.” appeared in the February 2021 magazine, which billed it as a “survivalist guide to work life in pandemic DC—including how we’re adapting, disinfecting, coping, and (occasionally) thriving.”
  • “What Was Your Worst Day at Pandemic Work” was published online on Feb. 23, 2021, and included readers’ answers posed on social media.

Enhanced Kleen

Those photographs of Mister Kleen conducting an Electrostatic Disinfection reflected one of the components of our enhanced cleaning program employed throughout the pandemic and beyond: Enhanced Kleen.

The multi-pronged program enhances Mister Kleen’s existing services to ensure facilities have the appropriate service levels and products to mitigate risk and exposure in today’s environment.

Service options include increased janitorial services, recommended one-time services, and services to address the changing environment.

Cleaning for Health and Appearance

Today, the concept of Cleaning for Health and Appearance has become the new normal. It is no longer enough for a facility to appear spotless – cleaning and disinfecting to curb viral pathogens have become became essential as offices and businesses strive to remain operational.

Even as the overwhelming threat of COVID-19 diminishes, Mister Kleen continues to incorporate the lessons learned during the global pandemic.

We work closely with our partners to re-evaluate cleaning programs over time, particularly when new outbreaks occur, including the recent winter “tripledemic” of flu, RSV, and COVID-19, as well as the current rise in norovirus.

As we approach almost 50 years in business, we are proud to be a leading provider of contract cleaning services to Commercial and High-Security facilities in the DC Metro region since 1976.
