As the DC Metro area experiences a slight surge in COVID-19 cases, many jurisdictions have accelerated  their timelines for making anyone 16 years and older eligible for the vaccine. While most Northern Virginia jurisdictions already designated Janitorial/Cleaning Staff as eligible under current rules, the state will open eligibility to everyone over the age of 16 by April 18.

In Washington DC, individuals working in commercial and residential property maintenance are currently eligible. Officials said that on April 19, eligibility will open to all DC residents 16 years and older.

Maryland opened its mass vaccinations sites  to anyone 16 years and older starting Tuesday April 6 and will expand that eligibility to any vaccination provider in the state on April 12.

SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT

Now that almost everyone is eligible for the vaccine, how do you actually get one? See below for the latest information from the different jurisdictions.

VIRGINIA:  Public health officials have set up mass vaccination sites in Alexandria and Arlington – both require pre-registration in order to make an appointment.

You can register on the state system at vaccinate.virginia.gov/ or on each local health department’s site:

• Alexandria
• Arlington County
• Fairfax County
• Falls Church
• Loudoun County
• Prince William County

WASHINGTON DC: If you live in Washington DC, you should pre-register on the District government’s site at coronavirus.dc.gov/vaccinatedc

MARYLAND

You can also get vaccines at non-government entities, such as CVS, Safeway, and Walmart pharmacies. Thankfully, Alexandria teenager Sawyer Thompson created a website that shows availability at multiple sites throughout the region: DMVVaccine.com. To get real-time alerts about openings, you can follow the Twitter account, @DMVVaccine.

As a reminder, the vaccines are free, no matter where you get them. Be cautious of any emails, calls, or texts offering an appointment in exchange for money. There are a number of vaccine scams going around and you’ll want to be aware of them and how to protect yourself.
